Audience Research
For our Audience research me and my group created an online survey, we shared it on Facebook and asked friends and family to complete it. As a group from our research we figured out that horror apocalyptic films have the target audience between 13-25. Because of this we have chosen our target audience to be 15-20. This makes us have a wider target audience, because of this we tried to make sure only people aged 15-20 would answer our survey. Making our certification 15. In our survey we used open and closed questions, this was because we could get straight forward answers but also we could receive answers that had a little more detail and explanation.

From our quantitative data, we have found that most of our audience are aged 15-18. Because of this we have chosen to have our classifications as a 15. We also found out what our audience do in their free time, because if this it will help us relate to our audience in the opening. We found that the majority of our audience (88.9%) would rather have a realistic location for our opening, this was good news and reassuring to us because our plan and ideas would fit the audience.
From question 8 we can see our audience would prefer to see dark colours rather than light. This is because is would make the opening more sinister and creepy. Common colours said by our audience were greys, blacks, (dark) blues. However the odd few have said to use lighter colours at the start of the opening, then changing to darker colours towards the end. This was because it would show the change of mood, tone and atmosphere in the opening. A similar question we asked was question 10, here we asked them what lighting would work better (high key or low key). From their answers we can see that they would rather see low key lighting. This makes it more dramatic.
And lastly for our qualitative data (question 11) we asked what sort of sounds and music would you expect to hear in a horror apocalyptic film. From our answers we can tell that our audiences all had different ideas and views. We had things such as doors creaking, screams, glass smashing ect. However they all said these for the same sort of effects. Like creating suspense, keeping the audience on edge and making the opening mysterious. For music our audience said to have fast and dramatic music (this would be like the score in the opening "dawn of the dead") This was because it would build tension. However some said to have no score (this would be like the opening "I am Legend"). Because it would leave the audience on edge. Lastly some said to have quite music with instruments such as piano and violin (this would be like the score in "The Road") this was because it wouldn't give away any of the plot and create the an eerie atmosphere.

Question 7 (the picture below), our audience would rather see casual clothing for our characters. This was because it would makes the opening seem more realistic and relatable to the audience. Because of this as a group make the choice to uses clothing such as t-shits, jeans, hoodies and even part dresses for one of our characters. However for our antagonists our audience said we should make the clothing ripped and bloody.
For our qualitative data, in question 6 we asked our audience what their favorite horror apocalyptic film was, this gave us a good idea what our audience is looking for. From this we could research these films to see the conventions in them. One film that came up more than once was World War Z. We have chosen to use this film as a guide and inspiration to make our own film opening. You can see this in the picture below.

Overall we are pleased with our survey and our results, our responses from our audience were clear and detailed. This made it easier for me analyse them and figure out what our audience wants.
