In the opening for dawn of the dead the most frequent shots was news reports. This connotes that there has been breaking news, and because of this it makes the audience feel tense. Things are only shared around the world at the same time on TV news reports if something drastic has happened. But because the opening uses news reports as a frequent scene, it make the film look more real and relatable. On the news reports it shows protests, fires/explosions, "people" eating people (we later find out they are zombies). There is so much distress and panic in the senses that it makes us feel worried, but also involved (this is not because it is relatable but also because POV shots are used). At one point in the opening it shows us a zombie, but also then links it to blood, by the screen turning red with an image of blood running down the screen. Because of this it makes the audience feel tense, but when we usually see blood we relate it to hurt and pain. Leaving the audience thinking there will be pain, maybe even death. A prop that is shown, that also has a big symbol to the clip is a ECG. They have used a ECG (and its sound) to show a patient with a high heart beat, slowly turning in to a zombie. This makes the opening more dramatic, but it also a small short sequence of how people turn. From the screen, when zombies are around or protest are uncontrollable, the screen smashes or crack like its glass. because this happens it makes it look like everything is falling apart. But it also makes it look like the zombies will break through and come towards us. It is like we are the news cameras, once again this makes us feel more involved with what is going on. Through the whole opening it is low key lighting, this makes the video look more dark, and dramatic. This type of lighting is used in most horror movies, because it makes them more intense.
here is two examples of the news reports in the opening scene
This is the effect of smashing glass, making the audience feel anxious that something will come through the screen.
